WILKINS BACKS MOYES

Former Manchester United midfielder Ray Wilkins has said that new manager David Moyes should win at least a trophy in his first season at the club in order to win over the supporters. Moyes comes as the replacement for Sir Alex Ferguson, who managed to get the club to close to 40 trophies during his 26 years at the club. This includes several league titles and two Champions League titles as well. Moyes, however, starts his United regime as a manager who is yet to prove himself when it comes to winning trophies.

Even though he was in charge of Everton for 11 years, he failed to win major trophies. Even though he cannot be expected to win the league with the club like Everton and their limited financial resources, many expect him to have won at least trophies like the FA Cup and League cup. However, Moyes failed to lead the Everton team to success in this competitions. Further, there is a fear amongst United supporters that Moyes may not be able to replicate the brilliant football given by Ferguson over the years.

Moyes’ Everton team are known for their hard-working abilities, but they’re not the best footballing side in the world. Wilkins is of the opinion that a trophy could change everything for Moyes at Old Trafford.

“Everyone has to understand that there will be new players coming in and players will go out and David will have to put his imprint upon Manchester United. But if he can win a cup this season – or even the Premier League – I think the supporters will say ‘good first season, lets crack on. I wouldn’t say anything derogatory on the Capital One Cup because last year we had some fantastic games in it, but Moyes certainly needs to win a trophy,” said Wilkins.
