Manchester United players, Paul Pogba and Raphael Varane, played their respective parts as France beat Belgium and Spain on the way to winning the UEFA Nations League. The Manchester United duo were named in the starting XI for the two games by manager Didier Deschamps. France had to do it the hard way to win both UEFA Nations League games.
In their semi-final clash with the Red Devils of Belgium, world champions France scored three second half goals to beat their opponents 3-2. Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema, Paris Saint Germain (PSG) star KylianMbappe (penalty) and AC Milan left-sided player Theo Hernandez were all on target for the French team at the expense of the Belgium team under Roberto Martinez.
The Manchester United duo of Pogba and Varanewere part of the France team that was lacklustre in the first half and they paid the price for it with two goals. Atletico Madrid star Yannick-Ferreira Carrasco and Chelsea summer signing RomeluLukaku were the goalscorers for the Red Devils. The late 3-2 win over Belgium came as a result of the strike from Milan defender Hernandez and it booked their UEFA Nations League final meeting with Spain. On their part, Spain had earlier beaten 10-man hosts Italy 2-1 in the first semi-final.
In the final, France came from behind to beat Spain 2-1 thanks to the second half goals from Karim Benzema and KylianMbappe. After a forgettable first half, the Spanish team took the lead through Mikel Oyarzabal. Spain shot into the lead shortly after France had hit the crossbar through the lively Hernandez.
Real Madrid striker was welcomed back into France fold just before the Euro 2020 tournament after several years away from the team and he provided the best moment of the final to level the scoreline for his team. Benzema scored two minutes after the goal from Real Sociedad star Mikel Oyarzabal. France completed the comeback win over Spain controversially through KylianMbappe with ten minutes remaining. The French team thereafter held on to win the second edition of the UEFA Nations League.
The Manchester United duo of Varane and Pogba were in the France team that won the World Cup title in Russia three years ago and they have been able to add the UEFA Nations League title to it.
